Synopsis
When 32-year-old Elias Finch rescues a scrawny tabby from a rain-soaked alley, he thinks he’s finally found companionship. Within weeks the cat—whom he names Mr. Marmalade—begins communicating through eerie eye contact and perfectly timed meows that compel Elias to lie, steal, and sabotage his coworkers. What starts as minor humiliations escalates into corporate espionage and a frame-up that lands Elias’s only friend in prison. As Elias unravels, he discovers Marmalade is no ordinary cat: the animal is the reincarnated familiar of a murdered whistleblower who needs a human vessel to finish exposing a pharmaceutical cover-up. Every “suggestion” from the cat brings Elias closer to the truth—and closer to becoming the next victim. With the body count rising and police closing in, Elias must decide whether to obey his feline overlord or risk everything to sever the bond that has made him both a criminal and a hero. The film barrels toward a rain-lashed rooftop climax where Elias and Marmalade face off in a game of psychological chess that redefines who is really holding the leash.
The story
Elias, isolated after a messy breakup, adopts Marmalade and begins obeying the cat’s first subtle commands—skipping work, lying to friends—while his life curiously improves. A coworker’s suspicious death makes Elias realize the cat’s influence is lethal.
Marmalade escalates: Elias must infiltrate his company’s vault, frame his best friend, and confront the ghost of the cat’s previous owner. Paranoia peaks as Elias tries to resist, only to suffer physical pain when he disobeys, while the conspiracy widens to city hall.
On the rooftop of the pharmaceutical tower during a storm, Elias chooses to sacrifice himself to destroy the evidence Marmalade seeks, breaking the psychic link. In a final twist, Marmalade adopts a new owner—an ambitious politician—hinting the cycle continues.

Cold open
INT. ELIAS'S STUDIO APARTMENT - NIGHT Rain hammers the single window. ELIAS FINCH, 32, sits in a thrift-store armchair eating cereal straight from the box. A wet TABBY CAT slips through the cracked window, lands silently, and stares. ELIAS You look like you’ve had worse nights than me. The cat blinks once. Elias’s hand moves on its own, pouring the last of the milk into a saucer. He freezes, confused. ELIAS (CONT'D) ...Did I just do that? The cat begins to purr. Elias’s reflection in the dark window shows two green eyes superimposed over his own.
Why now
In an era of algorithm-driven decisions and pets as emotional surrogates, audiences are primed for a story about losing agency to the very creature we invite into our homes; the film taps post-pandemic isolation, gig-economy paranoia, and the meme-ified obsession with cats while delivering cathartic revenge against faceless corporations.
